"Sentience"
 
This chimpanzee painting was so absorbing to do: I wanted to capture the intensity of the chimp's stare, and also bring in sense of softness and vulnerability. This involved doing something I love - letting go of trying to control the medium of water colour so that I it becomes very loose and playful, moving around the paper in unexpected ways and creating delicate patterns and markings. And then coming in with very fine and precise detail to render the subtleties of eye and fur.
 
This soulful, gentle creature has such extraordinary depth. Looking into that eye, we find ourselves getting lost . . . It is impossible to look at such an animal and not see and feels its sentience.
 
Original watercolour infused with flower essences on Saunders 300gsm cold press paper.
