Kestrels are one of my favourite birds to paint, and this particular pose is one that I have attempted several times: the moment the kestrel is caught, on the wing, hovering in mid-air.
Here, against a bright swirling sunlit sky, this stunning bird of prey is richly delineated in deep brown, burgundy and steel blue. I could feel the energy of both sky and bird - the tug and tension between them - as I painted this piece.
This painting has so much drama and poise! It would go beautifully near a window or over a fire place.
Watercolour infused with flower essences on Saunders Waterford 300gsm cotton paper.
