This is the second time I have painted this beautiful character. He keeps drawing me back.
Here, in the heart of the Lake District, I meet these beautiful Herdwick sheep everywhere and they always touch my heart. Their nature is so peaceful, gentle and steady.
I know a lady who farms these in Dorset, and who often receives calls asking about her 'bear sheep'. They do have a look of the bear about them!
This is the noble Herdwick tup - the ram.
In this painting, his wool coat is full of intricate textures created by splashing paint, water, alcohol and even salt, to build up a patina of subtle colours and shapes.
Watercolour and acrylic ink, infused with flower essences and sprinkled with a slight shimmering of russet gold powder, on Saunders 300gsm paper.
Size of piece: 17 x 17"
Size of painted area: 16x 16"
