I am returning to a subject that I have painted before: I love this image of two baby swallows together: the adoring look in one, the sense of protection emanating from the other.
I seemed to spend a lot of the spring/early summer of 2023 regularly rescuing a particular family of swallows - the parents kept flying into our house and needing to be helped back out again; the cat brought in one adult entirely unharmed, popped it down beside me and then proceeded to take herself off to bed - I picked up the swallow, took it outside and it flew away; and then for two days I was on duty helping two young swallows that had left their nests prematurely.
It seems that being a swallow isn't a straightfoward business! As such, these birds speak to me of vulnerability, extraordinary strength and tenacity, and family. And I felt the need to pick up my brush and try and capture something of their lovely brave natures.
