Tree Sparrows are now rare in the UK; yet, this is a bird that I used to see regularly as a child. This beautiful little bird is often dismissed as being just another 'little brown bird', but it is full of colour and character when you look closely.

With its handsome chestnut head and nape, and the rich black band delineating eye and chin, this little bird is easily recognised if you are fortunate enough to see it.

I love to show the unsung heroes of the countryside in my paintings. The birds that can go unnoticed, yet whose decline or rise tells us a great deal about the health of our countryside. In recent years, the numbers of Tree (and its slightly more common cousin the Hedge) Sparrow have started to stabilise and even to rise slightly.  This painting champions this heroic and handsome 'little brown' who is beginning to make a comeback on the fringes of our awareness.

With its soft greens, blues, golds and browns, and the sense of the sparrow nestled in the hedgerow, this painting is a small, 'cosy' piece of art that would go beautifully in a space that needs a little warmth and character.
